Horses and Their Human

She makes this sound using her fingers against the curl of her tongue
Its pitch causes our ears to stand up and our heads come to full attention
She walks towards us calmly, slowly, arms by her side
Her gait reassuring
Her breathing in her belly letting us know that there is nothing to worry about
The sound she makes is a call for dinner
She knows the way we sense
Our nervous system so highly attuned to our environment
She knows that it matters to us the way that she approaches
That she can come in because we allow her
We could just as easily turn her away – shun and have nothing to do with her tall two legged form
She’s in because she paid attention
Because she knows the way we work, what makes us tick
She knows and takes our cues to respond to what we need
She’s able, as a thinking creature does, to put her needs aside to care for ours
What she knows for us is love
What we know of her – is partner
We’ve taught her how to ask with kindness, gentleness, clarity
She now knows that the slightest shift of her body asks something of us
To connect deeply and fully enables further knowing
She now understands that it is fear at the root of her anger
By our response we remind her to breathe deeply, slowly down in her belly to calm her nervous system
It is not us she is mad at, but at herself
When she is heightened so are we
Briefly in that moment we’re not sure of her… just briefly though as ours is a foundation of knowing and trust
Our work might never be done the two legged kind
It is their thinking that gets in the way of their being
We know the way of being
It is being that we want to bring the two leggeds back to
We want to bring her all the way back to where she remembers what it is likeTo be content in the all …..and the nothing….. of just BEING
We will get her there for what she knows for us is love
What we know of her – is partner
